Leave no trace: camping responsibly in the north

Leave no trace: camping responsibly in the north

Saiful Muluk, Fairy Meadows and Rama Lake are more popular every year. The way we camp decides whether they stay worth visiting.

Seven habits

  • Plan ahead. Know the rules for the area and pack food in reusable containers to reduce rubbish.
  • Camp on durable ground. Use existing campsites and stay at least 60 metres from lakes and streams.
  • Carry out all rubbish. Including fruit peels, wrappers and cigarette ends.
  • Wash away from water. Carry water to wash dishes and use biodegradable soap sparingly.
  • Keep fires small, or skip them. A stove cooks faster and leaves no scar on the meadow.
  • Respect wildlife and livestock. Watch from a distance and never feed animals.
  • Be considerate. Keep music low, and respect local communities and their land.

Leave every campsite a little cleaner than you found it.
