The beginner’s camping checklist

Your first camping trip does not need a mountain of gear. It needs the right few things, packed so you can find them in the dark. Use this list for a one or two night trip.
Shelter and sleep
- Tent with pegs, poles and guy lines
- Sleeping bag rated for the coldest expected night
- Sleeping mat (it matters more than the bag)
- Pillow, or a stuff sack filled with clothes
Kitchen
- Stove and enough gas for every meal plus one
- Pot, mug, spoon or spork
- Lighter and a backup fire starter
- Water bottles or a filter
- Rubbish bags to carry everything out
Light and safety
- Headlamp with charged battery
- First aid kit
- Power bank for your phone
- Downloaded offline map of the area
Clothing
- Warm layer for the evening, even in summer
- Waterproof jacket
- Spare socks
- Hat and sunscreen
Pack heavy items close to your back and keep your headlamp, snacks and rain jacket where you can reach them without unpacking.
